Best time to visit Umiam Lake, Meghalaya

Umiam lake is one of the largest artificial lakes in India which is also known as Barapani Lake. It is around 15 km away from the main city Shillong, Meghalaya.  

This lake is created in 1960 after a dam was built by Assam State Electricity Board which is also popularly known as Umiam Dam to generate hydroelectric power.

The main purpose of that dam was to store water but Recently, The lake has become one of the major tourist destinations in Meghalaya because of the amazing picturesque view. This lake is also famous for water sport, Boating, Trekking and Camping, and a lot more.

If you are planning to visit this lake then you must plan to visit between 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m for water sports or other games. However, you can enjoy the landscape view anytime from outside.

Boating at Umiam Lake:

Boating is one of the most perfect activities to do in this Lake. There are three types of rides available in that lake and those are a solo, couple, and family ride and the cost starts from Rs 20/-. To ride the boat you can take the boat from the Umiam lake boathouse and enjoy the view.

Water Sports:

If you are visiting this lake then you must not miss this opportunity to experience water sports.

Water Sports Complex opens early morning at 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM on weekdays as well as the weekend.

If you are traveling from Guwahati then you will get the bus as well as cabs from Airport as well as from the Railway Station. or else if you are traveling from Shillong then you can hire a taxi from Police Bazaar to reach the lake.

Things to remember:

  1. Some small snacks shop is there but it will be better if you carry enough water and food for the day.
  2. You will need to walk some distance to reach the lake.
  3. Never pollute or litter the place and avoid plastics.
  4. While doing boating please wear life jackets.
