Kerala State Lottery History
In 1967, a Department was established in the government sector for the first time in India to organise paper lotteries, giving Kerala, the "country of God," yet another first. In order to generate cash via the sale of lotteries and to give the poor and needy who belong to the marginalised sector of society a reliable source of income, this idea was conceived by the late Shri. P. K. Kunju Sahib.
The first Kerala lottery ticket, priced at Rs. 1, was launched in 1967 by the September 1 Department, whose creator and director was Shri. P. K. Seydu Mohammed. The initial reward was set at Rs. 50,000. The first draw was place on January 26, 1968.
Soon, several other states organised their own lotteries similarly. However, thanks to proactive measures taken to protect the welfare of low-paid and helpless agents, Kerala State Lotteries continues to lead the way in terms of revenue generation, job creation, credibility, transparency, and dependability in the conduct.
The department runs a monthly lottery as well as seven weekly lotteries every week, six bumper lotteries annually, and seven weekly lotteries per week. It has 14 District Lottery Offices, 21 Sub Lottery Offices, a Regional Deputy Director for Audit office in Kozhikode, a Directorate located at Vikas Bhavan, Thiruvananthapuram, and a Joint Director Office in Ernakulam.
The Department of State Lotteries is governed by Taxes(H), which is a division of the Ministry of Finance. Kerala's Secretary to Government, Taxes Department is the official designated by the government to oversee lottery organization and the selling of other state lotteries inside the state.
