History of Ragdoll Cat

The first Ragdoll cat was a white domestic longhaired Persian/Angora named Josephine, who lived in the 1960s (see image below). Some report that Josephine was a wild cat that resided in a colony owned by her neighbours, the Pennels, while others state that she belonged to Ann Baker, a Persian breeder from Riverside, California.

Josephine was struck by a car, which is what we know, and this is where the tale takes a strange turn. Ann Baker took her to the University of California's veterinary facility, where she claims Josephine was put through government testing that left her comfortable when lifted and pain-free.

Regardless of government plots, Josephine had two sons with two different dads. Blackie, as the name suggests, was a black cat, while Daddy Warbucks, also known as Raggedy Ann Daddy Warbucks, had a cream-coloured coat with dark points and white mittens. The Ragdoll breed is credited with its origins to these two guys. Raggedy Ann Tiki (Tiki) and Raggedy Ann Kyoto (Kyoto) were born as a result of Daddy Warbucks mating with one of Blackie's offspring. Another daughter of Josephine, Buckwheat, gave birth to Fugianna after she was wedded to Daddy Warbucks.

The first Ragdoll cats registered with the NCFA were Daddy Warbucks, Tiki, Kyoto, and Fugianna in 1966. Daddy Warbucks is ranked first. Several breeders started breeding Ragdoll cats around this time, and in 1971 Ann formed the International Ragdoll Cat Association (IRCA) with rigorous guidelines on how Ragdoll cats might be produced.

Several breeders disobeyed Ann's stringent rules and went out to create the breed alone. For other cat groups to finally recognize the Ragdoll cat, Laura and Denny Dayton decided to breed the cat. As a result, the Ragdoll Fanciers Club International (RFCI) was established in 1975. Four Ragdoll cats were acquired from the Daytons in 1981 by Lulu Rowley of the Petil-lu Cattery, who later introduced the breed to Britain.

Ragdoll Cat appearance

Large and robust, these stunning cats have long fur and a smooth, silky coat. Ragdolls are a breed with little to no shedding; however, there may be more shedding in the spring than usual. This breed doesn't shed because they don't have an undercoat, yet they are not considered "hypoallergenic" cats. These cats often measure 17 to 21 inches long (without their fluffy tail) and stand between 9 and 11 inches tall. According to the Cat Fanciers' Association, ragdoll cats normally weigh more than females and range in weight from 10 to 20 pounds.

According to the Ragdoll Fanciers Club, there are five different ragdoll coat patterns: colourpoint, bicolour, mitted, lynx point, and tortie point. Black, white, grey, blue, cream, lilac, chocolate, seal, and red are common ragdoll hues. Blue eyes are a well-known trait of this species. However, they are not exclusive to ragdolls.

Ragdol cat Temperament

As peaceful as cats get, this lovely breed is. Their propensity to go limp when picked up is where the term "ragdoll" originates. These cats enjoy being cuddled and hugged and will unwind in your arms for however long you let them to.

The Ragdoll has an intelligent, kind, and incredibly loving demeanour. These gentle cats are affectionate and want human contact, yet they are rarely pushy. Ragdolls are excellent companion animals since they are incredibly dedicated to and loyal to their owners.

Although these 'soft, floppy cats' are often laid-back, Specialty Purebred Cat Rescue director Kirsten Kranz adds that every cat is an individual, and it's crucial to do your homework before bringing home a kitten, regardless of the breed.

You might hear very little from these silent cats regarding noise. Unless anything bothers them, ragdolls usually only make a little noise. When cats talk, they usually utter short, gentle meows and maps to communicate their needs, like hunger or affection.

Your ragdoll cat might prefer to scale the highest spots in the home than other cats do. The CFA refers to these cats as "floor cats" because they prefer to be close to the ground but are more than willing to climb onto a couch or bed to cuddle up next to you.

The clever and simple-to-train cat breed is known as the Ragdoll. They can quickly do some stunts with a little patience and proper instruction.

Ragdol cat grooming

Due to their extensive hair coats, ragdolls should be brushed often to reduce matting and prevent hair from tying. A bath is optional as long as you maintain neat and clean hair on them. Keep their ears clean at all times.

Ragdol cat health problem

Ragdoll cats are normally healthy pets with a long lifetime of 13 to 18 years.

Ragdolls' most serious health hazards include urinary tract problems and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). Reputable breeders will check your kitten for health problems, but it's crucial to continue screening them until they are adults. HCM and other health issues may not appear in your cat's early years.

Tips for Maintaining a Ragdoll Cat

Make sure to spend time with your ragdoll cat, or if you don't have the time, think about getting another pet with a ragdoll or two ragdolls so they can interact or stay occupied. These cats may quickly become unhappy or depressed when left alone.

To be healthy, ragdolls require an extremely high intake of protein-rich food. Therefore, one should select cat food high in nutrients and proteins. It's a good idea to review the nutritional information on the package before buying cat food. Additionally, you may give your cats chicken, salmon, etc. You might also feed your cat this commercial food: Best High-Quality Protein Cat Food India 2022.

Provide a litter box that is simple to access. Ragdolls require a litter box for poop. Make sure your Ragdoll is aware of where its litter box is located. Keep the litter box in a location where it may be used by your Ragdoll if necessary, such as a closet with a door always cracked open. Choose a larger, deeper litter box for ragdolls because they are a bigger breed. A covered litter box might not be appropriate for such a huge breed. Ask the breeder what kind of litter they utilize if you get a ragdoll kitten. Use a litter that is the same type. Your Ragdoll won't be perplexed by a new litter box.

Make sure to stock up on toys. Toys will assist in keeping kids occupied and active. Make sure to buy a ball for your Ragdoll because they enjoy playing ball fetch.

Ragdolls don't need a lot of physical activity. Typically, they adore just lying down. At least 20 minutes of playing or exercise for your cat will be more than enough.

Take vaccination papers from the breeder if you get a ragdoll cat to keep track of all the vaccinations the cat has had. Talk to your veterinarian about this vaccination history so that any missing doses may be administered and so that they can be properly protected against all illnesses and restored to health.

Make sure you have a regular health checkup every five to six months. In this manner, your cat's health will be confirmed, and any underlying health problems may be treated sooner.
