Dowry is an ancient practice where the family of the bride's give money, property or any other assets including gold, silver etc at the time of marriage. Initially it was done to give financial security to the bride but gradually it has became an evil practice in India.

Why dowry is prohibited by the law?

In the beginning, it might have helped the bride with financial security, but later on, it has become a curse on the women. The groom and groom's families started taking advantage of dowry as it is easy money, not hard work, so when a bride's family didn't meet the expectation of the groom's family, they started torturing the woman.

Domestic Violence: In the late 90's, domestic violence increased drastically. In 2024, a total of 6,237 serious domestic violence cases were received by NCW(National Commission for Women) in India.

Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961: This act strictly prohibited giving or taking dahej(Dowry) in any form.

Punishment Under Law: Giving or taking dowry can attract five or more years of Jail time and a fine of more than Rs 15,000/-.
